Woke up with a plan and a patch of ground Sun comin’ up, no one else around Grabbed that shovel, said “this won’t take long” First few digs, felt steady and strong But the dirt got hard, and I leaned in tight Put my weight down with all my might CRACK went the handle, split clean through Just stood there thinkin’, “now what do I do?” Said forget that shovel, I got somethin’ new Gas-powered auger gonna push it through Fired it up with a rattlin’ roar Bit hit the ground, I was diggin' once more Spinnin’ and bitin’, cuttin’ down deep Thought this machine was the one to keep Then the motor choked… went still and dead Left me in silence, just shakin’ my head Tryin’ to dig a hole, just a simple thing Man versus dirt, what trouble it brings Every time I try, somethin’ goes wrong Just wanna dig this hole, but it’s takin’ all day long Called in a favor, brought in the steel Big ol’ backhoe with power you feel Said “now we’re talkin’, this’ll get it done” Pulled levers back and away she run Bucket came down like the hand of fate Scooped that earth, didn’t hesitate Dirt went flyin’, hole got wide Kept on diggin’, couldn’t slow that ride When I shut it down and the dust all cleared I looked down in what I feared Hole too deep and twice too wide Now I gotta fill back what I just laid aside Tryin’ to dig a hole, just a simple thing Man versus dirt, what trouble it brings Every time I try, somethin’ goes wrong Just wanna dig this hole, but it’s takin’ all day long Yeah… just needed somethin’ small… Now I’m haulin’ dirt, tryin’ fix it all… Shovel broke… auger quit… Backhoe went and overdid it…
