The eagle drifted westward On the final breath of day Its wings caught fire against the sky Then slowly slipped away And all across the open land The evening started to glow Like the whole wide world had paused Just to watch the daylight die Gold melted into amber Amber faded into red Long ribbons of orange and violet Spread wide across the sky And for a moment The sky looked close enough to touch And I stood still beneath it all Soaking in the pure magnificence The sunset carried grandeur Too wide for words to describe A quiet sort of greatness No manmade painting could hold Then slowly The colors softened into blue The horizon dimmed And the first evening stars appeared But the wonder of that burning sky Stayed shining in my mind Long after the daylight was gone
