Gratitude in Healing After Partner Loss
Healing after partner loss. The loss of our primary relationship, our husband, wife or partner, is one of the most difficult things for us to go through. The pain, loss and grief can be overwhelming. One might ask, “what is there to be grateful for?” I believe that every moment of my life is a gift from God, and that I must thank God and praise God for EVERYTHING in my life instead of pleading with God to change difficult situations. I must accept the bad things that happen as part of God’s plan to reveal God’s perfect love for me. In Romans 8:28 we are told, “We know that in ALL things God works for good with those who love God.” What does this mean for me today? If I surrender all to God, any thoughts or feelings of loss, anger, loneliness, joy, frustration, unforgiveness, etcetera, then I accept that God has allowed these things into my life in order for me to grow in some way. When I say, thank you Father Mother God for this pain, even though I don’t see any good in it right now, I trust that you have something to teach me and I ask you to help me stay open to your word. In Merlin Car-oth-ers book, Power In Praise, he uses one hundred fifty pages to continually reinforce the ideas of; “joyful acceptance of the present condition,” that the, “The turning point cannot come until we begin to praise God FOR our situation instead of crying out to God to take it all away,” and that, “When we sincerely accept and thank God for a situation, believing that God has allowed it to come about, there is released into that situation a super natural, divine force that causes changes beyond what can be explained as an unfolding of natural events.” If everything God does is LOVE IN ACTION, then it is much easier for me to say, thank you God for my car breaking down today. Who is it you want me to meet? I trust you to give me the words you want them to hear, and the courage to speak them. Instead of getting frustrated at being late I begin to look forward to the opportunity ahead of me. Instead of anger or depression, I feel anticipation and curiosity. I am happy to miss out on anger or depression. Thank you God that I feel lonely today, for it allows me to feel your unconditional love. Remembering does not always have to be painful. I am grateful for good memories, however few, and I consciously choose not to obsess about the bad memories. I have the knowledge that I am safe in God’s arms of love. God’s presence here gives me hope for each moment and I am thankful for that attitude of gratitude that allows me to live, feel and grow instead of being lost in hopelessness or helplessness. Gratitude is one gift we can give to ourselves to help us move along on the journey of healing our hearts, minds and spirits. Sometimes it is difficult to find anything to be thankful for. It may sound impossible. To help you with making an attempt at developing an attitude of gratitude, write out your own worksheet called God Incidences. Please take a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts such as Today I am grateful for, and why you are grateful for it. You may share what you have discovered in grief groups or keep it to yourself if that feels safer for you. It is a tool for you to use to learn about yourself and what God is doing in your life. Take it home. Use the worksheet whenever you want a lift to find something good. Here are some Gratitude Thoughts, to help you get started. Today I am grateful, that I got up out of bed. Today I am grateful, I ate healthy, whole food. Today I am grateful, for a restorative night’s sleep. Today I am grateful, for a smile from a stranger. Each one is unique. Remember them, consider whether it applies to you or someone in your life and notice what comes into your mind. What can you think of to be grateful for today? Then consider what you can do to bring more of that thing into your life. Thank you for sharing this time with me. I hope you will learn to live a life of gratitude and share that with the world. Living life with a conscious decision, to root myself in an attitude of gratitude, brings moments of grace every day. Wishing you, moments, of grace, every day. Wishing you, moments, of grace, every day.
