Last Call for the Living
LAST CALL FOR THE LIVING [Cold Open — distorted radio transmission, lonely banjo through static] [ROBOTIC VOICE] Population unknown. Radiation high. Last safe watering hole: Exit 95. [Generator coughs. Telecaster enters.] [Verse 1 — outlaw-country groove, gritty female lead] The Last Honky-Tonk still burns in red Three towns past where the highway ends Tin roof rattles when the bomb wind blows But the beer stays cold, so nobody goes Cyborg cowboy at the corner booth Got one glass eye and a gold front tooth Drone overhead keeps time with the band Bartender’s pouring from a gasoline can House band’s six dead circuits strong Playing every old-world country song Then the jukebox screen flashed LADY RED And every rusted boot hit the floor again [Build — banjo loop starts glitching] Somebody yelled, “Turn it up!” Somebody killed the lights [DROP / HOOK — huge four-on-the-floor beat] Last call! Last call! Anybody still alive? Raise whatever’s in your glass If you made it through the fire tonight Last call! Last call! Let the dead machines testify If the whole damn world is gone We’re gonna dance till the power dies [Instrumental — banjo versus synth bass, 8 bars] [Verse 2 — beat strips back, tense] One-oh-three, those steel doors moved Whole room turned when a stranger came through No chrome shining underneath her skin No scanner port where the wires went in Geiger counter barely made a sound Bartender dropped what he was putting down One old soldier whispered, “Can’t be right…” “Thought the last pure human died.” She didn’t ask for shelter Didn’t ask what year Just stared up at the stage Like she’d heard a ghost in there [Music glitches and stops] The band was halfway through Lady Red When the stranger raised her head She said— [Silence] “You’re singing that song wrong.” [Industrial bass pulse begins] [Story Break — half-time, spoken/sung] The guitar player froze mid-chord Singer’s blue eyes blinked twice She said, “There used to be another verse Before the satellites.” Machine said, “No record found.” She smiled. “Yeah. That’s what I was afraid of.” [Cinematic buildup] She stepped beneath that flickering sign Put one hand on the mic And sang four lines nobody there Had heard in half a lifetime [Missing Verse — almost acoustic, human vocal only] When the towers fall and the wires go cold Keep one good story somebody told Names disappear, but a melody Can carry what the world won’t keep [Long silence] [Soft robotic harmony repeats last line] Can carry what the world won’t keep… [Massive full-band DROP] Last call! Last call! Anybody still alive? Raise whatever’s in your glass If you remember who you were tonight Last call! Last call! Human, metal, wrong or right If one voice remembers the words Then something made it through the fire [Post-Drop — aggressive banjo, industrial bass, crowd-style robotic chops] LAST CALL STILL ALIVE LAST CALL SURVIVED [Verse 3 — driving, faster] By four a.m. the roof shook loose Generator coughed its final fuse Every screen went black but one And nobody moved when the power was done They sang Lady Red without the band Tin throats, flesh lungs, hand in hand And the stranger laughed when the chorus hit Like she’d been waiting years for it Then daylight crawled through bullet holes Across the barroom floor Somebody turned to ask her name— She wasn’t there anymore. [Beat cuts.] No tracks outside. No engine sound. Just four new lines Written down. [Final Build — heartbeat under static] Now every night when the red sign hums And something lost comes wandering in The machines play the verse she gave them Before the old song begins And nobody knows who she was Or where she went that night But every time they reach those words The human heart monitor lights. [FINAL DROP — biggest section] Last call! Last call! Anybody still alive? Raise whatever’s in your glass If you made it through the fire tonight Last call! Last call! Let the whole wasteland testify You can bury every city— [Dead stop] But you can’t kill a song If somebody remembers why. [Full-band explosion] LAST CALL FOR THE LIVING! [Outro — 70s outlaw guitar, degrading synth, dying generator] [ROBOTIC VOICE] Song archive updated. Unknown verse added. Author— [glitch] —unidentified. [Single banjo note] [Power shuts off.]
