°- (v2) Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness if I Do (1922)
There ain't nothin' I can do, or nothin' I can say That folks don't criticise me, But I'm going to do just as I want to anyway, And don't care if you all despise me! If I should take a notion To jump into the ocean, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do! If I go to church on Sunday, Then just shimmy down on Monday, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! If my friend ain't got no money, And I say, "Take all mine, honey", 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do If I give him my lasy nickel, And it leaves me in a pickle, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! There, I'd rather my man was hittin' me, Than to jump right up and quittin' me, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do do! I swear I won't call no copper If I'm beat up by my papa, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I There ain't nothin' I can do, or nothin' I can say There ain't nothin' I can do, or nothin' I can say That folks don't criticise me, But I'm going to do just as I want to anyway, And don't care if you all despise me! 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! Nope nope. 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! If I should jump into the ocean, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! Weather I go to church on Sunday, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! Or Give my friend all of my money, 'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! I'm going to do just as I want to anyway, T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do! There ain't nothin' I can do, or nothin' I can say That folks don't criticise me, But I'm going to do just as I want to anyway, And don't care if you all despise me! I'm gonna do just whatever I want to. 'T'aint nobody's business if I do! That there was a new manifestation of the classic "'Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness if I Do" (also known as "Ain't Nobody's Business"). Written by piano players Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins, the song was first published and recorded in 1922. The song was, and still is, a definitive anthem of personal freedom, defiance, and rejection of social judgment. The song has been recorded by dozens of legendary artists, perhaps most famously by Bessie Smith, recorded in 1923, as well as Billie Holiday's soulful 1949 rendition. Jimmy Witherspoon's topped the charts in 1949 with his version which was later inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame. Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Diana Ross, and Cher have all performed it and now you've just heard Public Domain Radio's created cover of it, just like we covered this one up next.
