A voice for the storm
At first, I felt alone Nowhere left to go Nothing left to do But drown inside the thoughts That pulled me deeper Deeper into my mind I begged for a voice Something I could use To break walls around me To tell somebody my truth Behind these eyes Were cloudy, dark skies A constant war A storm I couldn’t hide Winds screaming through the silence a little girl would cry Curled up beneath blankets Too afraid to let them inside Afraid to make a mistake Afraid they’d turn away So she learned to disappear Before they had the chance to stay She thought she didn’t belong Thought there was nowhere she fit So she swallowed every word And buried every bit But somewhere underneath it all There was a spark burning bright A little voice that whispered… “Maybe you can write tonight.” So I drew the storm I sang the rain Put every broken piece In a different kind of frame I opened every locked door And let the light come through Even if it only lasted For a moment or two These stories are my scars These songs are who I am And if somebody hears me Maybe they’ll understand I spent so long afraid That no one would ever hear Now I’m turning all that silence Into something they can feel Oh-oh I found a voice inside the noise Oh-oh I finally found my voice I told my stories in the colors That I couldn’t say aloud Painted all the things I carried When I couldn’t make a sound I wrote about the places No one wanted to see The things we hide behind smiles The things that live underneath And every song became a window Every drawing became a door A way to let somebody know “You don’t have to hurt anymore.” I am not fearless I’m trying to be free Trying to make some sense Of everything inside of me And somewhere along the way Someone listened to the words The stories I was carrying Were finally being heard So I drew the storm I sang the rain Put every broken piece Into a different kind of frame I opened every locked door And let the light come through Even if it only lasted For a moment or two These stories are my scars These songs are who I am And if somebody hears me Maybe they’ll understand I spent so long afraid That no one would ever hear Now I’m turning all that silence Into something they can feel I’m still scared sometimes I still lose my way Some nights the storm comes back Like it never went away And I’m still learning How to let people in Still learning that a mistake Doesn’t mean I’ve failed again But I don’t have to fight alone I’ve got hands that pull me through Friends who sit beside the silence When I don’t know what to do And when they need somebody I’ll be there for them too Because somewhere along this journey I learned what kindness can do Maybe that’s what healing is… Not making the storm disappear. Just learning how to sing While it rains. [Final Chorus: explosive full-band climax, soaring electric guitars, live drums, stacked harmonies] So I draw the storm I sing the rain Turn every shattered piece Into something beautiful again I open every locked door And let the light come through And even when the darkness returns I know what I can do These stories are my scars These songs are who I am And if somebody hears me Maybe they’ll understand I spent so long believing I would always disappear Now every word I’m singing Says, “I’m still here.” I’m still here… I’m still here… And that little girl who thought She’d never belong… She found a voice. She found a song. And maybe someone listening tonight Will find theirs too.
