Toby and Sam By Shirah Liben Ozery Come with me to the Land of Higgelbee Where friends live happily as can be. Some are tall, some are chunky Some are funny, like the monkey! The owls are wise, the elephants blue Some may even look like you! Some may fly and others prance One may swim while some just dance. Cats can climb, horses can jump When snails crawl, they bump, bump, bump! Toby the giraffe is a very tall guy Looks like he may touch the sky. See him now, down by the brook Drinking water, come let’s look. He sees a bird, sitting in the sand The bird looked sad. He is always on land. It is Sam, the swallow, who once loved to fly Now sitting at the brook with a tear in his eye. Sam’s wing had cracked, which changed his fate Now as for flying, it is just too late. Sam looks up at Toby, so high and so tall, Sam cannot get up there, no not at all! Sam dreams of that view from high up in the trees Which he once knew while flying in the breeze. He hopes and he wishes, he sits under a tree But the tallest he gets, is when on his knee! He cannot fly, this is so true But singing is something he loves to do! Toby is thinking how great it would be If only a singer he too could be! Toby sits and hears Sam’s sweet song He listens and knows something is wrong. Toby understands what Sam is saying As usual, Sam has started praying. Toby wants to help and stop Sam’s pain He thinks till he has exhausted his brain! Suddenly it came to him clear and fast Flying for Sam would fix things at last! Flying, that is it, but without a wing? How could he do it? There must be something! He stood up erect; bumped his head on a tree “That’s how”, he exclaimed! “Sam will sit right on me!” “I will take Sam high up to the top of the tree He will sing in my ear, we will both feel free!” “As I run and I leap, Sam will glide through the air If he concentrates deeply, he will forget I am there!” Sam gets the message, no more needs to be said Toby bends down and Sam sits on his head! Toby raises his neck and brings Sam up to the trees Sam is singing and is no longer on his knees. Our journey has ended, Tell Higgelbee Goodbye! Should you hear a giraffe singing, you will know just why! If you ever find a Sam, sitting at a brook, Just stop and calm him, by reading this book! Perhaps you can help him, lift him up to the sky, He will sing for you always, as you help him fly!
