Guess Retirement Kept Its Promise

Forty years of punchin' that old time clock, Dreamin' 'bout the day it'd finally stop. Told family and friends, "Just wait and see... Retirement's gonna set us free." We'd fish that lake... Drive out west... Finally have time To catch our breath. But I never thought way back then... I'd lose so many family and friends Nobody told me about the quiet... The empty chair across the room. All those plans we used to talk about Now echo in the afternoon. Bought that camper I'd always wanted. Mapped out roads we'd never seen. Now every mile that rolls underneath Are nothing like my dreams. Campsites filled with laughter... Families gathered 'round their fire. I smile and wave... Then close my door... Sit alone with a lost desire Picked up that old guitar again. Built a shop behind the house. Thought I'd hear familiar voices... Now those voices are not around. Some moved south... Some moved on... Some are just names carved in stone. Funny how a crowded lifetime Can end up all alone. You spend your youth Saving every minute... Thinking times the thing to own. Then one day You finally have it... And find yourself Spending it alone. Tomorrow I'll watch another sunrise... Pour one cup instead of two. Guess retirement kept its promise... It just forgot To keep All of you.
