[Verse 1, piano] A bank’s trainee manager, then a band that earned no pay, Greg Hitchen reached the age of thirty with no plan, as people say. He joined a Sydney publisher, ran Singapore in a year or two, “I just had to learn on the job,” he says, and nobody told him what to do. [Pre-chorus, handclaps] Tony Steel, the founder, had a way of answering, He’d smile, and say it plain: Why not? Let’s go for it! Why not? Why not? [Chorus] Let the sun shine, let it shine on the show floor, Terrapinn, Terrapinn, who could ask for more? Let the sun shine, Greg Hitchen’s going for it, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine once more. [Verse 2, minor key] Fifteen offices and fifteen hundred shows, A thousand seminars on top of those. Second biggest in the world, and never in the black, Too many towns, and nothing coming back. [Bridge, drums drop out] The thirtieth of June, two hundred in Asia, The fifteenth of March, there were sixteen. Wiped out, destroyed, he said, the whole engine gone, He called it dissatisfaction, and he carried on. [Pre-chorus, repeat] Why not? Let’s go for it! [Chorus] Let the sun shine, let it shine on the show floor, Terrapinn, Terrapinn, who could ask for more? Let the sun shine, Greg Hitchen’s going for it, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine once more. [Verse 3, back to major, sunrise] Birmingham, twenty-eighteen, a solar show in red, Half a million down a year, but “I could do better,” he said. Doubled it once, then Covid closed the door, Now there are twenty solar shows, and the sun’s on every floor. [Verse 4, sales] He wants hunters selling sunshine on the telephone, Not clerks who fill in forms, or sit alone. You can’t manage a target, only the work behind the sale, Ideas and relationships, and people that you grow, he says, will never fail. [Verse 5, people] Every senior chair is filled from inside, or it stays bare, The lifers started young, and the graduates grow there. The hired-in stars on high pay proved “way too average,” he said, So it’s back to the young, and a mentor’s hand instead. [Verse 6, values today] No five-year plans these days, he says, life never cooperates, Just a purpose: tech that changes lives, and a short list of what it hates. No defense, no gambling, no tobacco on the floor, Vaccines, orphan drugs, digital health, and solar, and more. [Middle eight, how he changes] A bot he built scores every buy, and seven is the line, He watches how the boss treats staff, and that’s the final sign. The Gulf has cost him forty, fifty percent of a third, It’s his biggest issue, yes, but here’s the final word: Otherwise, he says, it’s nothing but opportunity, Sunshine on the sales floor, as far as he can see. [Pre-chorus, band stops] Why not? Let’s go for it! [Final chorus, key change up a whole step] Let the sun shine, let it shine on the show floor, Terrapinn, Terrapinn, who could ask for more? Let the sun shine, Greg Hitchen’s going for it, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine once more. [Outro, spoken over the fade] Simple always wins. Greg Hitchen. Terrapinn. Let the sun shine.
