Two Deep (Fractions)

V6

[Intro: spoken over jazz-funk piano] Pencils up. Every fraction's got two numbers — two jobs. Two deep. [Verse 1] Bottom is the denominator — how many equal parts make the whole, Top is the numerator — how many of those parts you hold. Slice a pizza into eight, eat three — three-eighths is gone, Every slice has gotta be the same size, or the fraction's wrong. That bar in the middle means divide — the top split by the bottom, Top smaller than the bottom? Less than one — that's proper, you got 'em. Same number top and bottom? Four-fourths — one whole, exact, Top bigger than the bottom? Improper — more than one, that's a fact. Number line, zero to one — chop it into equal splits, Bottom tells you how many spaces, top's how many jumps it hits. [Hook] Two deep (two deep!) — every fraction's got a pair, Bottom cuts the whole in equal parts, top counts the pieces there. Whatever you do to the top, you gotta do to the bottom too, Same move, same number — and the value stays true. (Top!) (Bottom!) — two deep — now you know. [Verse 2: double-time] Equivalent fractions — same amount wearing a different name, One-half, two-fourths, four-eighths — smaller cuts, the size the same. Multiply the top and bottom by the same number, let it grow, Two-thirds times two over two — four-sixths, same spot on the row. Simplify — divide them both by the greatest common factor you find, Twelve-eighteenths — six fits in both — two-thirds, the simplest kind. Comparing? Make the bottoms match, then the bigger top decides, Two-thirds or three-fourths? Eight-twelfths, nine-twelfths — three-fourths wins the ride. Improper to mixed? Divide — the quotient's the whole, the remainder's the top, Seven-thirds — three goes in twice, one left — two and one-third, that's the swap. Mixed to improper? Bottom times the whole, plus the top — keep the bottom the same, Two and three-fourths — four times two plus three — eleven-fourths, that's the name. [Beat Switch: darker heavier drums, aggressive cadence] Adding or subtracting? Bottoms gotta match before you start, One-fourth plus two-thirds — rename 'em both in twelfths, that's the art. Three-twelfths plus eight-twelfths — eleven-twelfths — add the tops, the bottom stays, Never add the bottoms — that's the trap that every rookie plays. Multiply? Straight across — top times top, bottom times bottom, no stress, Two-thirds times three-fifths — six-fifteenths — simplify — two-fifths, no less. Keep it, change it, flip it — first one stays, divide turns times, the second flips around, Three-fourths divided by one-half — three-fourths times two — six-fourths — one and a half, that's how it's found. Mixed numbers in the problem? Make 'em improper first, then go, Simplify the answer every time — lowest terms is how you show. [Outro: spoken, beat drops to piano] "The recipe needs three-fourths of a cup. You're making half." Half of three-fourths — "of" means times. Top times top — one times three — three. Bottom times bottom — two times four — eight. Three-eighths of a cup. Two numbers. Two jobs. Two deep. Class dismissed.
