YOU CAN’T DO THAT

V4.5-ALL

We took a time ship back in time to 1953 And met a boy just down the street. “My name is Jon,” said he. We walked then we got tired. “Let’s take the bus’” said me. I climbed into a front seat, “You can’t do that,” said he. Why? Jim Crow We got off near two fountains. Let’s take a drink said me. I went to use “White Only” “You can’t do that,” said he. Why? Jim Crow “Who is Jim Crow,” I asked him, “King or president must he be? He seems to have control over most of everything.” And Jon said, Two separate doors, one white, one black Whites enter the front, blacks enter the back Jim Crow are laws to separate by race and the laws are enforced all over the place. Blacks and whites can’t go to the very same school Blacks and whites can’t marry, so says the rule. Blacks aren’t allowed to look whites in the eye Blacks can’t speak to a white passing by. Blacks can’t eat in restaurants for whites unless there’s a wall 7 to 8 feet in height. Blacks and whites can’t use the same bathrooms to go or sit with whites for movies or shows. I said, “I hate these laws. I wish they’d cease to be.” Yes, they deny our human rights, there is no peace,” said he. Because, Jim Crow We got back in our timeship, till back to now we’d see. We found in 1965 Jim Crow laws ceased to be. “I like living in my own time. I don’t like that time,” said me. “Black people spent their lives oppressed and that just shouldn’t be.” There still are laws kept on the books to keep blacks down, you see. These remnants of those times before to stop us being free So let’s fight those laws that still remain till everyone is free, Or else those laws, you know their name, return for us to see. No more, Jim Crow.
