Crate Training One of the first things owners need to teach their puppy is not to potty in the house. One very effective method is one used by most breeders and trainers - crate training. Not only can you house-train a puppy using a crate, but when used correctly, the dog naturally learns to look upon it as his den. The crate's success as a house-training tool is simple: Puppies do not like to soil their sleeping area if they can possibly avoid it. But remember that a puppy also needs time to play. Use the crate when you can't watch your puppy, but don't overuse it. Wire crates work well, they fold up and are portable. The crate should be big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lie down. We suggest a crate that will be big enough for when the pup is an adult but has a divider panel so it can be sized as the puppy grows. Remember, you're using the crate in part to teach your puppy not to potty in there, so don't put paper or weewee pads on the bottom. You may use a blanket for bedding if your puppy doesn't potty on it or rip it up. If he does, don't give him any bedding until he outgrows the urge to soil or tear it up. Give your pup a few SAFE toys so that he can keep himself entertained and fulfill his need to chew (especially during teething). A couple of favorites are the Kong or the Nylabone these promote good canine dental hygiene, enhance overall mental fitness and encourage positive behavior.
