[Intro] Sun going down over gravel and grass Three shadows walking and none of them pass [Verse 1] Late light bleeding through the trees in the square Old poem in my mouth and a storm in the air Stick in my hand and the dirt is my page Drew it in the dust like I'm cracking a cage Three ropes pulling, set a third of a turn Each one drops to nothing, then it waits for its turn Add 'em up — zero, not a coin in the pot But the middle keeps spinning like the zero's a lot Nobody's pushing and the push never stops One climbs, one sinks, while the other one drops Wheel with no hand and a wind with no gust Whole world turning off a sketch in the dust They said you need sparks jumping gap after gap I said give me three rivers, I don't need the map Every rope is a ghost when you stare at it alone Lay three in a ring and the ring is a throne [Hook] Three, six, nine — turn it a third, it's still mine Same room, same light, every corner in line Three, six, nine — it's a key, not a sign Turn the lock one third and it opens on time [Verse 2] Build a room with three walls cut the same to the line Turn it a third and the room don't know the time The songs that stay put when you swing it around Stay locked in that room, they don't leak to the ground Knock one wall crooked and the music walks out That's the whole lock, that's the proof, not the doubt Stack 'em tight in the dark like the stars in a crate Count the rings round the middle, every ring's in a three-way state Every shell comes in threes, none left on the shelf 'Cause the turn moves them all, only the heart keeps itself Tie a rope with three loops and you paint it three ways Every crossing agrees and it stays how it stays Drag it, twist it, run it hard through the tide Colours hold till you cut the rope open inside Some knots wear one colour, you can't split 'em apart Need a deeper eye to see the knot in the heart [Hook] Three, six, nine — turn it a third, it's still mine Same room, same light, every corner in line Three, six, nine — it's a key, not a sign Turn the lock one third and it opens on time [Verse 3] Now they sell you a hum, priced out by the hour Say the digit is magic and the number's the power Change the clock on the wall and your three turns to six Number on its own is a salesman's trick Count a circle in nines and the nines line up neat Measure with a new ruler, nines fall off the street Key was never the ink, key was always the turn Third of a circle where nothing sits still and burns Everything moves but the heart of the wheel Nobody stands in the same place — that's why it's real Three roads meet at a crossroad, three cuffs on a seam Cut a world into three-legged rooms, that's the scheme Every seam's shared by two, every room's got three doors Count it any way you like, the three is still yours [Bridge] Walked the block three times before I'd step through the door Wanted rooms split by three or I'm not on the floor Let 'em laugh at the habit, let 'em laugh at the man Every city's still humming off three in a band [Hook] Three, six, nine — turn it a third, it's still mine Same room, same light, every corner in line Three, six, nine — it's a key, not a sign Turn the lock one third and it opens on time [Outro] Three ropes, one wheel, and a stick in the sand Key to the turning was a turn of the hand Key Verse 1: the sunset walk and the drawing in the sand are Tesla’s own story of discovering the rotating magnetic field, from his 1919 memoir My Inventions. The three ropes are three currents a third of a turn out of step: each falls to zero, together they always add to zero, and still the field never stops turning. The sparks are the old DC motor’s commutator, which he was told no motor could do without. Hook: “turn it a third, it’s still mine” is the rule the straw man found. {0, 3, 6} mod 9 is “divisible by three”, and it’s exactly what a third-turn leaves unchanged. Verse 2: The room with three walls is light in a three-fold symmetric medium. The modes that stay put never leak until one wall is knocked crooked. The stars in a crate are the densest packings: the hexagonal lattice, E8 and Leech. Their shells come in threes because the turn moves every point except the centre. The rope with three loops is the trefoil, with its 9 three-colourings that hold until the rope is cut. “One colour” is the Conway knot, which only a deeper invariant could see into. Verse 3: The hum sold by the hour is the Solfeggio frequencies, whose 3s and 6s swap when the units change. “Nines in a circle” are an artefact of measuring in degrees; switch to another unit of angle and the nines disappear. The real key is a third-turn where nothing but the centre stays still. The three-legged rooms are pairs of pants on surfaces (Mirzakhani) and the three-way vertices in surfaceology. Both obey the same three-way counting rule. Bridge: his habit of threes, as his biographers tell it, and the power grid still running on three-phase current.
