[Verse 1] She sat by the phone, eyes fixed on the glass The night held its breath as the minutes past No goodnight, no footsteps, no truck in the drive She asked the Lord softly, “Please bring him home alive” [Pre-Chorus] Every siren made her heart turn cold Every minute felt like a story untold [Chorus] Call her, Hero in blue Tell her the night is almost through Tell her your badge is coming through the door She won’t have to fear anymore Call her, Hero in blue She’s been waiting here for you While the whole world turns its anger loose She still believes in her hero in blue [Verse 2] Each morning she had watched as the headlines rolled by Saw good people harden and kindness die A careless word could make a target appear The uniform carried a lifetime of fear He walked into places where hatred had grown Guarded the people who wanted him gone He held back the dark with a promise and light Then vanished again into somebody’s night [Chorus] Call her, Hero in blue Tell her the night is almost through Tell her your badge is coming through the door She won’t have to fear anymore Call her, Hero in blue She’s been waiting here for you While the whole world turns its anger loose She still believes in her hero in blue [Bridge] Her head came up sharply—was that the ring? A second bell sounded, undoing everything Six years of waiting, six years of this fear “Not this kind of news, not tonight, not here” [Verse 3] The hospital hallway was quiet and white His brothers stood beneath fluorescent light Heads bowed low, their hands by their sides She entered the room where her whole world lay still inside She touched his hand gently, then sank to the bed A thousand small memories crowded her head No final goodbye could contain what was true She loved him beyond the badge, beyond blue [Final Chorus] Call her, Hero in blue Though the night has taken you Your badge may rest, your watch may end Every life you guarded still remembers you as friend Call her, Hero in blue She will carry on for you When the world forgets what courage used to do She’ll tell them the story of her hero in blue [Outro] She stood by the phone as the morning came through Still holding the memory of her hero in blue While the whole world turns its anger loose She still believes in her hero in blue
