Todd Terry is one of house music’s most innovative, successful, and prolific producers. More than any other artist, Terry helped define New York house in the ’80s, blending classic disco, Chicago house, hip-hop attitude, breakbeats, and fearless sampling into a sound that became a major influence on U.K. rave and hardcore. Born in Brooklyn, Terry began DJ’ing as a teenager before making the switch from hip-hop to house in the mid-‘80s. Early productions like “Alright Alright,” Royal House’s “Can You Party,” and his Jungle Brothers collaboration “I’ll House You” became milestones of New York’s early house scene. Working under his own name and dozens of aliases, Terry went on to remix or collaborate with artists including Björk, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, and Annie Lennox. His biggest mainstream breakthrough came with his ubiquitous 1995 remix of Everything But the Girl’s “Missing,” followed by garage house anthems “Keep on Jumpin’” and “Something Goin’ On.” Decades later, Terry remains as prolific as ever, continually releasing, remixing, collaborating, and reshaping the sound he helped pioneer.
