It started in a practice room in Seoul, late at night, at the end of an evaluation week that had nearly broken all three of us. Sori, black hair pulled back and eyes red from crying, had just been told she wasn't leader material. Mina had spent the afternoon on the phone with home, being asked when she'd finally quit. Ara hadn't said ten words all week. We barely knew each other. Everyone else had gone home. Then Ara sat down at the old, out-of-tune piano in the corner and played a song her mother used to sing. Mina started humming along. Sori found the harmony underneath them, quiet at first and then steady, as if she'd been holding it for us all along. It wasn't perfect. But for four minutes, none of us felt like a failure. We came back the next night, and the night after that. We sang before we had a name, before anyone was listening, before we knew it would matter to anyone but us. Sori led us then, and she still does. She never needed the loudest voice. She just listened for ours first. That's what every song is about: finding the people who hear you, just in time.
