Just finished "Animal Gospel". Animal Gospel is a record about hunger—literal, emotional, sexual, creative and spiritual—and what happens when a person spends too long trying to behave properly while those needs go unanswered. Set against a hot, claustrophobic Southern landscape of bedrooms, roads, motel rooms, fields and nighttime walks, the album watches civilized language gradually give way to the body’s simpler vocabulary: teeth, appetite, territory, touch, movement and survival. But rather than glorifying instinct, it asks which desires deserve to be followed and which ones merely feel true because we’re starving. By the end, salvation isn’t escape or somebody finally giving the narrator what he wanted. It’s recognizing his own hunger clearly enough to stop waiting for permission to feed it.
