Ground Rules
Lyrics by Steven R. Drennon, ©️ 1994 - 2025 Please check out my YouTube channel if you get a chance: https://www.youtube.com/@firstep3 [Instrumental Intro] [Verse 1] Girl, you’ve got to play it smart Or he’s going to break your heart. Don’t let him get too close to you Until he can prove his love is true. You’ve got to let him know That you’re going to let him go. If he stays out at night And doesn’t treat you right, There’s something he should know. [Chorus] In love there's got to be ground rules As far as you’re concerned. You can’t be making a game of this Or else you’re going to get burned. Tell it to him straight, You can’t afford to wait. It’s a lesson you’ve already learned. [Verse 2] You’ve got to look him in the eyes And say there won’t be any lies. If he tells you even one Then it’s over before it’s begun. If you’re going to take a chance And try to gamble on romance, Tell him right up front You can’t be too blunt. It’s something he should know. [Chorus] In love there's got to be ground rules As far as you’re concerned. You can’t be making a game of this Or else you’re going to get burned. Tell it to him straight, You can’t afford to wait. It’s a lesson you’ve already learned. [Instrumental Interlude] [Verse 3] So before you hold him close, Just be sure that he knows That you'll be on your guard, And you'll be watching him hard. Tell him if he’s got his doubts And decides that he wants out, He better tell you now Before you take that vow, Otherwise you’re better off without. [Chorus] In love there's got to be ground rules As far as you’re concerned. You can’t be making a game of this Or else you’re going to get burned. Tell it to him straight, You can’t afford to wait. It’s a lesson you’ve already learned. [Instrumental Outro]

Excellent question, and I can only share what I've tried and found. First, I agree that this isn't really Nashville sound (maybe NEW Nashville, but NOT traditional). I've found that if you combine the right styles, you get a sound that seems to work really well. These three have been really good for me. Another that works really well is "smooth jazz" and "country rock". It took a lot of trial and error before I stumbled on these two combos, but they seem to work for a good number of my songs.

I’m absolutely devouring this! It’s polished, radio-ready perfection—a country hit that’s got the right music and vocal , no doubt a country hit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! ❤❤❤ This was hands down, the most difficult song I have created here. I first tried to create this song back in January, and every couple of weeks I tried something different, but I just couldn't find anything that felt right. I think the ninth line in each verse really through them off, but also, the chorus was a problem. I rewrote the chorus twice, without changing anything else, and I feel like I finally got it right.
