They Used to Know Me
## Walking Together: Songs for Solidarity ## This is an entry in the Walking Together songwriting contest. The WEF estimates there are over 150 million people without homes worldwide. This project is aimed at supporting efforts to help people "made of potential" out of homelessness in co-operation with Homeless Entrepreneurs. Verse 1 I came back to this town in the winter, With a duffel bag and dreams in my hand. But the war I fought kept on fighting, Left me lost in my own homeland. Folks don’t see the man I used to be, Just a shadow they step around. I walk these streets in worn-out boots, While the rain keeps comin’ down. Chorus This town used to know me, but now I’m just a ghost. Once had a home, a family, and the ones I loved the most. Now I sleep beneath the overpass, where the cold winds howl and blow. This town used to know me, but now it lets me go. Verse 2 I’m haunted by the things I can’t forget, The faces of the brothers I lost. The bottle became my only friend, But the comfort came at a cost. Some nights I dream of a warm front porch, And my mama calling me inside. But when the morning comes, I wake alone, To the life I can’t outrun or hide. Chorus This town used to know me, but now I’m just a ghost. Once had a home, a family, and the ones I loved the most. Now I sleep beneath the overpass, where the cold winds howl and blow. This town used to know me, but now it lets me go. [Guitar Solo] Bridge If you see me by the roadside, Don’t turn your face away. I’m more than just the rags I wear, I’m still fighting every day. Chorus This town used to know me, but now I’m just a ghost. Once had a home, a family, and the ones I loved the most. Now I sleep beneath the overpass, where the cold winds howl and blow. This town used to know me, but now it lets me go. [Outro Solo, Fade-out]
