Dixie and You
Lyrics by Steven R. Drennon, ©️ 1992 - 2025 Please check out my YouTube channel if you get a chance: https://www.youtube.com/@firstep3 Somewhere out there in the heart of Dixie, I’ve got a feeling that things are fixing to change, and there’s nothing that I can do. We used to lay there in the fields of clover, But now it seems that those days are over for good, and it makes me feel so blue when I remember Dixie and you. When these thoughts of you and Dixie cross my mind, how I wish that I could hold her one more time. Now as I sit here feeling sad and lonely, I tell myself that if I could only call you, and talk to Dixie on the phone. Then I could show you that I’ve really changed and maybe you could help me rearrange my life, so I won’t be all alone. Then I could join you and Dixie at home. When these thoughts of you and Dixie cross my mind, how I wish that I could hold her one more time. Now that you’re both there in the land of cotton, I’m all alone here and I’m feeling rotten about the way I treated both of you. And yet, somehow there in the heart of Dixie, I’ve got a feeling that things are fixing to change, because I know just what to do to be together with Dixie and you. When these thoughts of you and Dixie cross my mind, how I wish that I could hold her one more time.

This one has a very interesting rhyme scheme, with the follow-up lines having a "tail" to carry over into the next line? Is there a name for this type of scheme, or is it something you have discovered? I like it. Very catchy.👍

Great catch! That is something that I actually came up with on my own. I needed the first line to end with "Dixie", and I couldn't find a natural way to end a sentence with something that rhymed. I came up with the idea of having the carry-over "tail" as you called it, and then I wrote the remaining lines using the same kind of structure. It served my purpose, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
