She didn’t stutter Didn’t blink Didn’t even pause to think It rolled right out Like saying “I’ll call you later” But never does She said “it’s fine” And I believed her She said “I’ll stay” And I relieved her Of all the weight she never carried Of all the love I thought we married She said “you’re the only one” While buttoning her coat And now I hear that phrase Everywhere, like a quote Was it practice? Was it nature? Did she learn it, or was she born smoother?
