It is the dried root of the peony species Paeonia lactiflora. Primarily valued for its medicinal properties rather than culinary flavor, Bái Sháo is described in TCM as having a bitter and sour taste. Its main traditional uses in TCM focus on nourishing the blood, often applied to regulate menstruation and alleviate pain, particularly cramps. It is also used to soothe the liver (a TCM concept related to easing spasms, irritability, and dizziness) and relieve muscle or abdominal pain. Bái Sháo is typically prepared as part of a larger herbal formula, often boiled in water to make a medicinal tea (decoction), or processed into powders or pills under the guidance of a TCM practitioner.
