I only know the southern part of Lapland in Sweden. I always went to Sweden first, before I started to explore further afield to Finland. I tried the Åland Islands first. I was a bit concerned about the language, but I'm getting along well with English. I now find Finnish very beautiful, although unfortunately I don't understand it. Lake Saimaa is magnificent.

Hiking in Lapland, carrying a tent and all your food and everything with you for a week or so is a wonderful experience. By the way, I tried making a Finnish tango again, inspired by this discussion. :)

I've been to the Åland Islands four times, and last year and the year before I also visited the Finnish mainland. The year before last I traveled along the west coast from Turku to Vaasa, and last year I was at Lake Saimaa and in Lahti.

Saimaa is really beautiful, as is the archipelago. And of course Lapland.
