All I Had to Lose
Lyrics by Steven R. Drennon, ©️ 1981 - 2025 Please check out my YouTube channel if you get a chance: https://www.youtube.com/@firstep3 [Instrumental Intro] [Verse 1] My leaving was quite sudden but I wanted it that way, For I was so afraid that you Would try to make me stay. [Chorus] I had to go, I was afraid, My heart would break if I had stayed. I left without a last goodbye, Afraid to see the tears you’d cry. If you had begged, or even cried, Could I have left, or even tried? So, I just ran before I knew, That all I had to lose was you. [Verse 2] I never said goodbye although I truly wanted to. I couldn’t bear to face the tears Which I might bring to you. [Chorus] I had to go, I was afraid, My heart would break if I had stayed. I left without a last goodbye, Afraid to see the tears you’d cry. If you had begged, or even cried, Could I have left, or even tried? So, I just ran before I knew, That all I had to lose was you. [Instrumental Interlude] [Verse 3] I feared that you might say the words Which I had once longed for, And I would be imprisoned by Your love forevermore. [Chorus] I had to go, I was afraid, My heart would break if I had stayed. I left without a last goodbye, Afraid to see the tears you’d cry. If you had begged, or even cried, Could I have left, or even tried? So, I just ran before I knew, That all I had to lose was you. [Instrumental Outro]

Thank you! I've been through that heartache, and I wish you all the best in dealing with it. Almost all of my heartbreak songs were written months or even years after the event, because I found that it was too difficult for me to get it right when I was still dealing with the emotion. My love songs and happier tunes were usually written in the moment, because those words came much easier. Allow yourself time to deal with it, and I bet you'll be amazed at what comes out of it.
